Our first actual asking email...
For a long time we've tried to avoid the inevitable email directly asking you for a donation. For the last three years we have had an annual benefit for Uddami to raise money. This year is an exception - instead of having a benefit we are asking you to please open your hearts (and pockets!) to Uddami and send us a donation... if you haven't given already this year.
Many of you have asked about monthly donations. This is now possible if you donate online. You can donate online through DonateNow or send a check to our new US project manager, Katherine Dyer - all the information on how to give a donation can be found here:
How you can help
Here are some examples of what your money can do:
$800 - one computer workstation
$650 - teacher salary for one year
$300 - full tuition for one student
$100 - one month's rent
$ 50 - teacher salary for one month
An important note - many of the companies you work for will match your donation to a nonprofit - please ask because then you are really giving Uddami twice as much.
Why no benefit?
To be honest, as our benefits get larger with more people in bigger venues, the amount of money we are able to raise gets smaller. Although we agree that it is a great way to let you know more personally about the school and our students, financially it doesn't make much sense to do a large benefit.
Next year we hope to have several small fundraising dinners - anyone who would like to host one of these special events should get in touch with us at uddami@india.com

About the school
Thanks to the grant from Hernán Zin earlier this year we have been able to buy two new computers and we now have 43 students enrolled. Also, for the first time ever we have a waiting list for admission to Uddami - obviously word is getting around town!
Congratulations to Tanuja Saha who has been hired by Phillips in their customer service department. Tanuja was offered this job just a month before she finished our course.
She insists that it's an easy job because Phillips products are so good that no one ever complains about them. There are three girls in Tanuja's family and her job will go a long way to helping to support the family.
Our second grant from Shadhika
Peter and Juthica Stangl have been kind enough to show Shadhika 's support for the second consecutive year by generously donating $5000. We believe as they do that it is very important to help educate women and girls, especially in India. Presently we have 7 continuing women students and 11 new female students from HOPE Foundation (Kolkata) and Loretto Rooftop school. Thank you Shadhika ! |
More good news...
We would Thank Hernán Zin and Acción por la Infancia , an organization based in Madrid, (not Barcelona, sorry about that!), for helping Uddami for the second time this year. This brings the total given by Hernán this year to $6000 .
Hopefully by now you have all seen the short video that was shot and edited by Hernán when he came last year to see the school. If not, click here!
Thank you once again Hernán!
One more important thank you
Thank you very much to Eli Kha, who works at Classroom.com for his very generous donation of $1000 to Uddami.
Our first American visitor
Perhaps you are wondering who Katherine, aka Katie, our new US contact person is. You might remember her from the benefit at 42 Degrees. She was wearing a gorgeous burgundy sari and as she is co-owner of 42 Degrees, she made sure the service that evening was flawless.
Katie came to Kolkata during July. At first she was a bit shocked because
people who have never been to India often feel as if they have somehow landed on another planet. After settling in she was very moved by the projects she saw and people she met, so much so that she has agreed to be our US contact person.
Bryan will be leaving SF mid-August, so please feel free to get in touch with Katie - if you are lucky she will give you some of her first-hand impressions of Uddami and Kolkata!
